In constructing the new headquarters, VBAG aimed to combine the old with the new and, in so doing, to preserve traditional values. The protection of values is to be found in the preservation of the historical part of the building, which faces the historic centre of Vienna - a UNESCO World Heritage Centre.

Partial demolition of the old building, which contains more than half of the basic fabric in the block, allowed it to be designed as an element of the Ringstraße development in a contemporary form with appropriate planned usage. The design required a great deal of sensitivity with regard to height, structure and materials; in particular, the character and design elements of the Wilhelminian structure had to be taken into account.

With its new headquarters, VBAG has succeeded in designing a distinctive, immediately recognisable and memorable bank building which satisfies the requirements of conservation area regulations as well as providing VBAG with a modern landmark headquarters.
